BLOG: Yamamoto putting on weight

Forward now hovering around 155-pounds

Oilers prospect Kailer Yamamoto can't be interviewed without being questioned about his size.

The forward, after attending Day 1 of Oilers Rookie Camp and having gone through fitness tests, is listed at 5-foot-8 and 153-pounds. At the NHL Scouting Combine in June, Yamamoto was around 146-pounds, making it clear that his off-season goal of putting on some weight was achieved.

"I'm about 155 (pounds)," Yamamoto said in the Oilers Hall of Fame Room on Thursday. "It's been a tough one to gain weight but it's coming slowly but surely."

The 18-year-old's trainers have been helping him put on healthy weight.

"My trainers, they're putting on the right weight," he said. "I think if I'm putting on the right weight, then it's going to make me grow faster."

Yamamoto also stressed the importance of building strength - another by-product of putting on healthy mass.

"I think if you're gaining that right weight and you're getting that strength, it's definitely going to help you out a lot," Yamamoto said. "If you're gaining that poor weight, it's not going to help you."
