BLOG: What Draisaitl needs to work on

by Chris Wescott / Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers announced today that they had assigned centre Leon Draisaitl to the Canadian Hockey League.

“We wish Leon the best in going back to junior,” Oilers Interim Coach Todd Nelson said. “The short time I had to work with Leon was a pleasure. I thought his game improved over the time that he was here and it’s a good opportunity for him to hone his skills and be a better hockey player and a more confident guy.”

Draisaitl 19, played in 37 games this season for the Oilers, scoring nine points (2-7-9). Nelson spoke about the roster decision and gave his thoughts on what Draisaitl needs to work on back in junior.

“In the case of Leon, I thought his foot speed through the neutral zone got better and that’s one thing he has to continue to work on but also developing the confidence to find the back of the net,” Nelson said. “He has that ability, he’s a great passer, I’d like to see him shoot the puck more but that goes for everybody in that locker room, we want to shoot the puck more. It’s just a few things to touch on. We talked to him about that and that’s what he’s going to work on.”
