BLOG: Talbot talks emergency backups

Scott Foster, a 36-year-old accountant from Oak Park, Illinois, became an instant celebrity in the hockey world thanks to an unexpected turn of events during Thursday's game between the Chicago Blackhawks and Winnipeg Jets.
Heading into the game, the Blackhawks were slated to have Anton Forsberg start in net with Colin Delia backing him up. However, after Forsberg was injured during pre-game warmup, Foster got some rather exciting news as the team's emergency backup in the building that evening. He'd get to suit up and sit on the bench for his hometown team.
That in itself would have been a dream come true for Foster, who's one of several names on the Blackhawks emergency backup goalie list. Every NHL team must have an emergency goalie in the building at every game, available for either team should an unexpected situation present itself, and Foster just happened to be that guy on Thursday.
Not only did he get to suit up for the Blackhawks and share a bench with superstars like Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane, the unimaginable happened when Delia was also injured six minutes into the third period. Foster, who plays men's league hockey in Chicago, got the nod and made his unforeseen NHL debut.
The Jets must have exploited this bizarre situation, right? Wrong. Foster made seven saves and didn't allow a goal as Chicago preserved a 6-2 win. He played the final 14:01 of the game and was selected as the first star of the night.
Oilers netminder Cam Talbot weighed in on the viral moment following Friday's practice in Calgary.
"I can't even imagine what that was like for him," he said. "I remember my first game, getting called up and getting the chance to go in there and play. But to do your day job and then come to the rink, strap on the pads and get to play at the United Center, it can't get much better than that. And then to come in and make some big saves against a pretty darn good offensive team, that's just an unbelievable story and good for him."
