The Oilers have signed defenceman Matthew Benning to a two-year contract.
The 22-year-old, right-shot blueliner was originally a sixth-round pick of the Boston Bruins in 2012. He has spent the last three seasons playing for Northeastern University, scoring nine goals and adding 47 assists for 56 points. He served as an assistant captain last season. In 2014-15, Benning was Hockey East Honorable Mention All-Star.
Benning is 6-foot-1 and 201 pounds. He has Edmonton area ties, as he is from St. Albert, AB. He played for the Spruce Grove Saints in the AJHL.
Benning also has hockey bloodlines. His father Brian played more than 500 NHL games and suited up for the Oilers (18 games in 1992-93). His uncle, Jim, is the GM of the Vancouver Canucks. His other uncle, Mark, played for Harvard and his grandfather, Elmer, is a long-time NHL scout.
