EDMONTON, AB - Despite team and personal challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Oilers forwards Gaetan Haas, Ryan McLeod and Tyler Benson are forging ahead in Switzerland.
Their respective squads - Haas with SC Bern and McLeod with EV Zug in the National League, Benson with GCK Lions in the Swiss League - have had games postponed and rescheduled due to the pandemic, while Benson told Post Media recently that he contracted and recuperated from the virus in October.
Despite the illness and requisite recovery time, Benson is leading the Lions in scoring in the Swiss second division with two goals and 11 assists for 13 points in 11 games. The 22-year-old left-winger also had a pair of assists in GCK's lone Swiss Cup tournament game.
Fellow forward prospect McLeod is also enjoying a productive start to his season on loan with Zug in the country's top circuit. The 21-year-old centreman has three goals and three assists for six points in 10 games, as well as one goal and two assists for three points in two Swiss Cup matchups.
McLeod's team is scheduled to take on Haas' Bern squad on Thursday. The 28-year-old centreman has scored three goals and two assists for five points in 10 games on his loan and was held off the scoresheet in his team's one Swiss Cup matchup to date.
