Former Oilers defenceman and current Oilers Entertainment Group Vice Chairman Kevin Lowe had much praise for his teammate Paul Coffey.
"Paul was doing as a defenceman what Wayne (Gretzky) was doing as a forward," said Lowe after the announcement that the 1984-85 Oilers were voted the
best National Hockey League team of all-time.
"His numbers I don't believe will ever be matched, just like Wayne's numbers will never be matched."
Coffey finished fifth in scoring in 1984-85, registering 37 goals, 84 assists and 121 points. In 18 playoff games that year, the defenceman filed an additional 37 points, second best in post-season scoring behind Gretzky, who had 47.
Coffey won the Stanley Cup four times in his career and was a three-time Norris Trophy winner. In 1,409 career NHL games, Coffey had 1,531 points.
"When his power play time was finished, I would go on the ice," joked Lowe. "So, I'd get the last 12 seconds of the power play if they hadn't scored by then.
"All joking aside, he was magnificent to watch."
