A man who needs no introduction stepped to the podium Thursday night to help usher in a new era of sports and entertainment for the City of Edmonton. As part of the official opening of Rogers Place, Wayne Gretzky spoke to the crowd in attendance.
"It really is a special arena," he said.
"It's friendly, it's classy, it's warm. I truly believe Edmontonians are going to brag and talk about (the building) for all eternity."
Gretzky offered his best wishes to the City of Edmonton and Oilers fans as well, saying "this place is special and I hope you guys make some new memories and win some more championships."
Before the official opening, Gretzky had a chance to step on the ice Thursday morning.
"The ice isn't quite as fast as Rexall," he quipped. "I tested it today and I wasn't as fast as in the 90s."
