BLOG: Gagner on vacant captaincy

by Chris Wescott / Edmonton Oilers

Oilers veteran forward Sam Gagner is seen as a potential captain candidate with last year’s captain Shawn Horcoff no longer with the organization. Gagner says he learned a lot from Horcoff and is honored to be mentioned as a candidate, but knows there are a lot of potential leaders on this roster.

“It’s always tough to lose a guy like Shawn,” said Gagner. In my time I have learned so much from him and what it takes to be a professional. You see the way he carries himself on and off the ice and how he works in the gym and on the ice. Kind of, every aspect of his life he just carries himself like a leader and I learned a lot from that.

“I think in terms of being mentioned in that breath, that’s exciting and it’s something that you want as a player. You want to be talked about that way. We have a lot of leaders in here and we have a great core. I think it’s important for everyone to step up and kind of fill that void as best we can.”

Head Coach Dallas Eakins says he has no timetable on selecting a captain.
