The Oilers seventh overall pick in 2013 Darnell Nurse played a solid game, finishing with three hits and four blocked shots in a 4-1 win over Vancouver tonight.
“I felt real good,” said Nurse. “Especially in my own zone and taking care of the puck and getting it out and making some solid plays. I think I’ve been getting more and more comfortable as the days go on.”
Nurse broke up a Canucks two-on-one rush with a great defensive play in the second period. He also sacrificed his body on the penalty kill to block a shot late in the second.
Oilers Head Coach Dallas Eakins glowed about the rookie’s performance tonight.
“That kid’s a hockey player that’s for sure,” said Eakins. “He played excellent tonight. There’s lot’s of compete in his game and when a player like that is up against the likes of some unbelievable players like the Sedins, usually the young player will be very shy with the game and be very defensive.
“He was on the war path. I thought he played one hell of a game and that looks like a real solid pick.”
Eakins said Nurse’s performance makes it difficult on coaches when it comes to cutting down the roster before the regular season.
