Like Mike Brown, Edmonton Oilers forward Ben Eager is a candidate to bring that sandpaper style of gritty play that Head Coach Dallas Eakins wishes out of his team.
Ben Eager spent the offseason getting prepared for the rigors of the NHL season. He feels like he is not only back to the shape he played in with the Stanley Cup winning Chicago Blackhawks in 2010, but he is ready to step into that gritty role right away.
“I’m ready to play, I’m ready to be that type of player,” said Eager. “I’ve done that throughout my career. I’m working for an opportunity to be able to show what I can do and I think (the coaching staff) will be watching closely and they’ll do what they want to do.”
Eager’s strong finish last season in Oklahoma City during the Barons Calder Cup Western Conference Finals run helped him be ready to hit the ice, full-go this season.
“It was great. I had a lot of fun down there on a good team. I think I’m a playoff type player. I’ve been in the playoffs and I know what it takes to win and what you need to do to get to the playoffs and to get there, you’ve got to play.”
From a veteran perspective, Eager has seen the changes in culture here under first year Head Coach Dallas Eakins and he is ready to contribute to the new era.
“I’m excited with the changes here and I’m looking forward to doing whatever I can to help out here.”
OilersTV’s Tom Gazzola will have an in-depth report on Eager from training camp tomorrow.
