The City of Edmonton, Oilers Entertainment Group, Oilers fans and many more have a lot to be proud of when it comes to the opening of Rogers Place.
Daryl Katz is no exception to the emotion as the team owner participated in the official opening Thursday night.
"I'm very proud," he said. "I'm very proud of what everyone has accomplished together. The amount of work that went into this, the resources, the people, the time that was required was an enormous undertaking. To see it all come together like this is exhilarating. I'm proud for the City and for everybody who worked so hard for this day, it's really fulfilling."
The Oilers owner said his message to the players heading into a new season and new era has been a simple one.
"I've told the players it's their house," Katz said. "And I hope they appreciate that it's their house and that no team that comes into this house will leave unscathed. That's the general idea."
As for the fans and Edmontonians coming to Rogers Place for an event for the first time, Katz says he hopes they appreciate the spectacle as much as he does.
"You'll have to ask them," Katz said, when asked what Edmontonians will say. "I hope they appreciate that the City now has the greatest arena in the world and it is the cornerstone of Ice District, which there is nothing like it in the world and that's something that Edmonton should be proud of now - having a world-class downtown. From the outset, that was our intention."
