EDMONTON, AB - During an off-season of development, Tyler Benson is already seeing a surge in his game.
"I shot a career round with my brother the other day and that was a 72," the 23-year-old, referring to the golf score he recorded recently, told EdmontonOilers.com.
"That beats my other career-high. I'm a high-70s, low-80s kind of guy."
The 2016 second-round selection is shooting low while aiming high ahead of Oilers Training Camp where he will vie for a position on the team. The former South Side Athletic Club Lion believes he has percolated through the professional level enough to pop in the National Hockey League after agreeing to a one-year, two-way contract extension worth an average annual value of $750,000.
And if his golf game is any indication, he could be in the hunt to breakout.
"I'm excited for another opportunity to try and make the NHL," the winger said. "It's nice that I'm able to try to do it with the Oilers still, the team that drafted me. I'm just looking forward to getting that opportunity to go to camp and getting a spot on that roster."
What was an unprecedented calendar year for most became a high-quality adventure for Benson and the Bakersfield Condors. Before the American Hockey League devised its modified Return To Play plan, the Edmonton product travelled to Switzerland to continue developing with the GCK Lions.
