Avalanche win NHL Draft Lottery; Oilers to select seventh

by Edmonton Oilers Press Release / Edmonton Oilers

The Colorado Avalanche won the 2013 NHL Draft Lottery held this evening in New York and earned the right to select first overall at the 2013 NHL Draft. The Edmonton Oilers position did not change and they hold the seventh overall selection.

The Avalanche, who would have picked second based on inverse order of regular-season finish, had the second-greatest percentage likelihood, 18.8%, that one of the numbered sequences assigned to them would be the winning combination. Per the new CBA, this was the first NHL Draft Lottery in which each participating team had the opportunity to win the first overall selection.

The Florida Panthers, who would have picked first, now own the second overall selection. The Tampa Bay Lightning, Nashville Predators and Carolina Hurricanes own the third, fourth and fifth drafting positions, respectively, in the first round.

The order of selection for the first 14 drafting positions in the first round, only, of the 2013 NHL Draft:

1. Colorado Avalanche

2. Florida Panthers

3. Tampa Bay Lightning

4. Nashville Predators

5. Carolina Hurricanes

6. Calgary Flames

7. Edmonton Oilers

8. Buffalo Sabres

9. New Jersey Devils

10. Dallas Stars

11. Philadelphia Flyers

12. Phoenix Coyotes

13. Winnipeg Jets

14. Columbus Blue Jackets

The remaining positions are determined by the results of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The drawing was conducted at the NHL’s New York office and the results were shown live during a 30-minute program produced and televised by TSN in Canada and simulcast on NBC Sports Network in the U.S.

Fourteen balls, numbered 1 to 14, were placed in a lottery machine. The machine expelled four balls, forming a series of numbers. The four-digit series resulting from the expulsion of the balls was matched against a probability chart that divided the possible combinations among the 14 participating clubs. The chart showed that the Avalanche had been assigned the numbers (3-5-8-11) that were expelled.

The 2013 NHL Draft will take place at Prudential Center in Newark. All seven rounds of the Draft will take place Sunday, June 30th starting at 3 p.m. ET. TSN will televise the Draft live in Canada and RDS will present exclusive French-language coverage. In the U.S., NBC Sports Network presents live coverage starting at 3 p.m. ET, while NHL Network in the U.S. continues live coverage starting at 8 p.m. ET.
