Carter began his NHL career with the Washington Capitals in 1996-97 and has played for eight different teams over his career, including the Oilers. Carter played three seasons with Edmonton, scoring 69-88-157 with 68 PIM in 211 games between 2000-01 and 2002-03. He came to the Oilers on November 15, 2000 as part of a deal that saw Bill Guerin go the Boston Bruins, and was sent to the New York Rangers, along with Ales Pisa, on March 11, 2003 in exchange for Cory Cross and Radek Dvorak.
