The 2023 Upper Deck NHL Draft wrapped up on Thursday with the Edmonton Oilers making three selections and one trade during Day 2 of the event at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.

The Edmonton Oilers made their first selection of the Draft when they took Barrie Colts defenceman Beau Akey with their second-round pick (56th overall).

"We really like him," said Oilers Director of Amateur Scouting & Player Personnel Tyler Wright. "A real smooth-skating, smart, puck-moving defenceman. A guy that put up some numbers in the OHL, so really happy that he fell to us. [It's a position that's] a little bit of lacking in the organization on the right side too, so we kind of hit two birds with one stone."

In the sixth round (184th overall), the Oilers took 6-foot-3 goaltender Nathan Day from the OHL's Flint Firebirds. The 18-year-old took over the starter's reigns for the Firebirds late in their season and into the playoffs and the Oilers scouting staff believes the arrow is pointing up for the athletic netminder from Grimsby, ON.

"Just another big goaltender," Wright said. "He had a real good playoff. He took over the starting job in the playoffs as a young guy. So, just another guy that we can put in the stable and try to groom."

With their final pick in the seventh round of the Draft, Edmonton selected overage forward Matt Copponi from the NCAA's Merrimack College. The 20-year-old finished second on his team in scoring with 14 goals and 29 points in 37 games and has a playing style that is tailor-made for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

"We talk about playoffs and we talk about getting harder to play against. [Copponi] is not the biggest guy in the world, but plays extremely hard," Wright said about the Oilers 216th-overall pick. "I think he scored 13 or 14 goals this year in college hockey. I just talked to him on the phone. We'll get him into Edmonton on Sunday and get a good look at him [at Development Camp] and send him back to college."
