Zegras, Hughes lead shenanigans at 2022 NHL adidas Breakaway Challenge

There was a mini-Jack Hughes, a Mike Tyson impersonator, a heckling from comedian Carrot Top and whatever the heck it was that Trevor Zegras pulled off while dressed in full "Dodgeball" gear.

There was a lot going on at the 2022 adidas NHL Breakaway Challenge. And it was all a pretty fun watch.

Minnesota Wild forward Kirill Kaprisov opened things up with an homage to his Russian countryman Alex Ovechkin, donning a red Washington Capitals jersey for his turn. Kaprisov scored on guest goalie Manon Rhéaume [the first woman to play in a NHL preseason game back in 1992] and immediately did the "hot stick" celebration.

Ovechkin, who was selected to the All-Star Team but could not attend due to being placed in COVID protocols, loved it.

Zegras, the Anaheim Ducks rookie who has succesfully executed the Michigan-style goal and the Michigan-style pass in regular season games, really went after it hard. But we're not exactly sure what to call it.

Zegras dressed as Peter LaFleur, Vince Vaughn's character from the 2004 comedy "Dodgeball," and even sported a white blindfold as the fictional athlete does near the end of the movie. As NHL mascots threw dodgeballs at Zegras, he somehow lifted the puck on his stick with the blade side down, did a 360-degree spin and reversed back to launch the puck into the net on a line drive.

Poor guest goalie Wyatt Russell, the actor and son of Kurt Russell who also happened to be college teammates with Wild goalie Cam Talbot, never had a chance.

Apparently, if you can dodge a wrench, you can defy the laws of physics and score an NHL goal you have to watch 500 times in slow motion to believe.

Hughes, the second-year New Jersey Devils forward, added some magic to the proceedings, capped by a smaller version of himself [who is the Devils equipment manager's 10-year-old son, Brekken Scoppetto] scoring and the pair performing identical stick tosses.

Chicago Blackhawks forward Alex DeBrincat went for the "Hangover" reference, dressing up as Alan, the Zach Galifianakis character from the 2009 hit. He also brought out Las Vegas Raiders players Derek Carr and Hunter Renfrow as Alan's buddies and a Mike Tyson lookalike dragging a stuffed tiger on the ice.

DeBrincat didn't even shoot a puck. He shot a less-than-regulation size football. And still scored on Russell.

But the winner, thanks to some questionable scoring from celebrity judge Jon Hamm, was Alex Pietrangelo of the host Vegas Golden Knights. Pietrangelo and Hamm are good friends from the forward's days with the St. Louis Blues, who count Hamm as one of their biggest fans.

His first attempt didn't go so well and that's when Carrot Top got involved. After a heckling, Pietrangelo brought out the Drumbots and missed the net again but was eventually named the winner thanks to Hamm's home cooking.

The Golden Knights didn't seem to mind on social media.
