ERIE, Pa. - Zack Torquato had a goal and four assists and Jaroslav Janus stopped 35 shots to lead the Erie Otters to a 5-2 win over the Niagara IceDogs in OHL action Friday night.
The Otters (12-39-2-1) snapped a four-game losing streak and a five-game home skid with the victory.
The Otters took an early 1-0 lead on a rare power-play goal, forward Justin Hodgman's 29th goal of the season.
The Otters entered the game in a 3-for-55 slump but finished 1-for-5 with the man advantage.
The IceDogs responded less than two minutes later on Chris DeSousa's goal. But the Otters finished the period strong, taking a 2-1 lead into the second on Zack Torquato's goal.
The power play handed the Otters a 3-1 lead 4:44 into the second, as left wing Kelly Geoffrey scored. Meanwhile, goaltender Jaroslav Janus stopped all 14 shots in the period.
Luca Caputi scored 6:53 into the third - his 42nd goal of the season - to move Niagara within 3-2. Caputi ranks third in the OHL in goals. But the Otters regained the two-goal lead on Luke Gazdic's goal on a 2-on-1 break. Linemate Zack Torquato assisted on the goal, his third point of the game. Rookie winger Shawn Szydlowski sealed the win by scoring into an empty net in the final minute.
Geoffrey and Szydlowski added two points apiece for the Otters, while Janus finished with 35 saves. Chris DeSousa scored a goal for the IceDogs (31-23-0-1).
