Gump Worsley with badge

Legendary hockey reporter Stan Fischler writes a weekly scrapbook for NHL.com. Fischler, known as "The Hockey Maven," shares his humor and insight with readers each Wednesday. This week Stan presents his monthly segment, "A picture is worth 100 words."
The photo features Lorne "Gump" Worsley, the last NHL goalie to play without a mask.

Gump Worsley was a star for the New York Rangers and Montreal Canadiens from 1952-70 before joining the Minnesota North Stars in 1970. He won the Calder Trophy as the top rookie in the NHL with the Rangers in 1952 and the Vezina Trophy as the top goalie twice for the Canadiens, in 1966 and 1968.
He helped the Canadiens win the Stanley Cup four times, in 1965, 1966, 1968 and 1969, and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1980.
But Worsley is often remembered as the last goalie to play without a mask in the NHL.
Asked why he refused a mask, Worsley explained, "It's too late to start worrying about preserving this kisser."
But after playing 23 games for the North Stars in the 1973-74 season, he tried wearing a mask for six games.
"I don't like it," he concluded, and promptly retired!
