Winterhawks down Silvertips despite being shorthanded from world junior callups

EVERETT, Wash. - The Portland Winterhawks continued their winning ways, despite being severely shorthanded, defeating the Everett Silvertips 3-2 on Sunday in Western Hockey League action.

Troy Rutkowski, Nicolas Petan and Keegan Iverson scored goals as the Winterhawks (28-5-1) won their fifth straight and 24th in their past 26.

Portland was missing five players because of the World Junior Hockey Championships, including Canadians Ty Rattie and Tyler Wotherspoon.

Ryan Harrison and Joshua Winquist scored for Everett (13-22-2). Austin Lotz made 28 saves in net for the Silvertips.

Iverson's rebound goal midway through the third period, which made it 3-1 proved to be the winner. Everett pulled within 3-2 in the final five minutes and had chances late, but the Winterhawks held on.

Mac Carruth earned the win in goal with 30 saves.
