WPG@EDM: McDavid wires a wrist shot past Hellebuyck

EDMONTON -- Connor McDavid had a goal and an assist to reach 60 points this season, and the Edmonton Oilers rallied for a 4-2 win against the Winnipeg Jets at Rogers Place on Saturday.

McDavid, who leads the NHL in points (21 goals, 39 assists), extended his point streak to nine games (seven goals, 13 assists). He is on pace to score 98 points in this 56-game season.
"I thought we did a great job of just holding on to the game and not letting them get to [a 3-1 lead]," McDavid said. "That's where [Mike Smith] steps in, and he was great again, and let us work our way back into the game. It took all night long, but I thought it was a real good team win."
McDavid set up Leon Draisaitl for the go-ahead goal on a 2-on-1 at 9:36 of the third period to give the Oilers a 3-2 lead. It was Draisaitl's eighth goal in the past eight games and 50th point of the season (18 goals, 32 assists).
"It was a great pass from [McDavid] and it made it easy for me to put it in," Draisaitl said. "I thought we played good all game. That's a really good team over there, they don't give you much, they have lots of skill and they can hurt you, so you have to stay patient against a team like that, and I thought we did a great job of that tonight again."

Darnell Nurse had a goal and an assist, and Smith made 29 saves for Edmonton (21-13-0), which has won three games in a row and seven of nine.
Pierre-Luc Dubois had a goal and an assist, and Connor Hellebuyck made 33 saves for Winnipeg (18-11-2), which was swept by Edmonton after losing 2-1 on Thursday. It's the first time this season the Jets lost two straight games in regulation.
"Consecutive-game losses isn't a sign of necessarily anything terrible brewing," Jets coach Paul Maurice said. "We've just completed nine playoff games against teams that are in the playoffs, seven of them on the road, and I think we ended up about .500 in that mix (4-4-1). So we're not bragging, but we're not dejected."
Andrew Copp scored on the power play at 10:36 of the first period to give the Jets a 1-0 lead. Nikolaj Ehlers' shot bounced off the skate of defenseman Adam Larsson and deflected in off Copp.

Dubois made it 2-0 at 15:27.
"Great job by the power play there getting us one, and we got a couple of pucks to the net and got rewarded," Jets forward Blake Wheeler said. "From there, it's almost kind of just tough to put your finger on it. It happens in the blink of an eye. Obviously Connor had another big night."
McDavid scored at 17:04 to make it 2-1. He collected a loose puck at the right face-off circle and scored from the slot.
Nurse tied it 2-2 at 3:19 of the third period off a pass from Jesse Puljujarvi at the blue line.
"I thought it was a really competitive game," Oilers coach Dave Tippett said. "We got down; the first power-play goal is one that bounced off two or three shin pads and goes in, and the second one is a double deflection. We're down 2-0, but I thought it was a fairly even period, and the goal by Connor to get it back to 2-1 was a huge goal for us just to give us some momentum."
Devin Shore scored into an empty net at 18:40 for the 4-2 final.
"It's the first time we've lost two in a row, so I don't think there's going to be a lot of panic," Copp said. "These two games definitely didn't go the way we wanted them to. You've got to be on the right side of the puck. I don't want to say perfect, but those two guys [McDavid and Draisaitl], one little play where guys were on different pages can end up in the back of the net. You can't give them any time and space. They'll burn you if you do."
NOTES: Nurse has 10 goals in 34 games this season, matching his NHL career high in 82 games in 2018-19. … Edmonton forward Jujhar Khaira had two shots and two hits playing 10:15 after missing two games with an upper-body injury. … Ehlers played his 400th NHL game. … Dubois got his 100th NHL assist. … The Jets had not lost consecutive games in regulation since Feb. 22-23, 2020 (4-2 at the Philadelphia Flyers, 2-1 at the Buffalo Sabres). They were 23-10-3 since then before being swept by the Oilers in the two-game set.
