The Detroit Red Wings
on Wednesday sent forward Kirk Maltby
, a four-time Stanley Cup winner, and defenseman Derek Meech
to their AHL farm team in Grand Rapids.
Both players were put on waivers Tuesday and were not claimed.
Maltby, 37, has been with the Wings since the 1995-96 season, but his role has diminished. He had 4 goals and 2 assists in 52 games last season. He reportedly will take some time to decide whether to report to Grand Rapids or retire.
"He's going to take time to talk with his wife, family and agent and decide what he's going to do," GM Ken Holland told the Detroit News. "Now that's he's officially cleared, he can take some time and decide."
The cuts left the Wings at the 23-player limit entering Friday's season-opener against Anaheim.
