The talks came less than a week after Dubas reportedly met with Nylander in Switzerland.
Nylander has skated with the Dornbirn Bulldogs of the Austrian Hockey League on three occasions in the past week, but did not attend practice on Tuesday, Sportsnet said. Nylander's younger sister, Jacquline, trains at the tennis center adjacent to their arena.
Sportsnet reported the Maple Leafs and Nylander's representatives are believed to be working on a shorter-term bridge contract after being unable to agree on a longer-term deal.
The two sides need to reach an agreement by Dec. 1 for the 22-year-old Sweden-born forward, who has 135 points (48 goals, 87 assists) in 185 games, to be eligible to play in the NHL this season.
The Maple Leafs (6-3-0) have lost two in a row heading into their game against the Winnipeg Jets at Bell MTS Place on Wednesday (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, SN360, SN1, TVAS).
