The Opponent

While the Wild currently owns a streak of seven straight wins, the Avalanche is trending downward. Colorado has lost its last three games and six of its past eight, including a 10-1 walloping from the Montreal Canadiens on Dec. 10. But the Avalanche has also been perfect against the Wild this year with a record of 2-0-0 in both the preseason and regular season. It was Colorado that handed Minnesota its last regulation loss, a 3-2 come-from-behind win for the Avs on Nov. 19 at Xcel Energy Center.
The Avalanche will also welcome back its starting goaltender, Semyon Varlamov, after a three-game absence due to a groin injury. Varlamov is expected to make his first start against the Wild this year.

Connections

• Wild forward Chris Stewart was a first-round pick of the Avalanche in the 2006 NHL Draft and played in 166 games with the franchise from 2008-11.
• Avalanche defenseman Erik Johnson is from Bloomington, Minn., skated at the Academy of Holy Angels and played one season at the University of Minnesota.
• Wild assistant coach Darby Hendrickson played in 20 games for the Avalanche during the 2003-04 season.
• Wild assistant coach Andrew Brunette scored 70 goals and had 205 points in 246 games over three seasons in Colorado from 2005-08.

Plus Pack

Minnesota has nine players with at least a plus-10 rating this season; all nine are amongst the top 33 of NHL plus/minus rating entering play on Monday. The Wild has three skaters rated in the top six of the League's plus/minus ratings: Defensemen Ryan Suter (1st at +22) and Jared Spurgeon (T-2nd at +18) and forward Jason Zucker (6th at +17). Only three players on the Wild roster have a negative rating this season.

At the Rink

About half the Wild lineup took part in morning skate before Minnesota faces off against Colorado at 7 p.m. at the Xcel Energy Center.
With forward Erik Haula out indefinitely with a lower-body injury, opportunity abounds for two Wild centermen: Tyler Graovac and Pat Cannone, who will play in his first NHL game tonight.
At age 30, Cannone doesn't fit the rookie mold, but he's been a mainstay of Iowa's lineup this year. In 29 games played in Des Moines, he's tied for third on the team in points with 16. He also wears an "A" on his jersey as a part-time alternate captain.
"[I'm] trying to treat it as just another game, another day, even though it's a little bit different," Cannone said. "I'm just looking forward to it and trying to help the team in any way I can."
Cannone will wear sweater No. 42 with the club. In the crowd Tuesday night will be Cannone's parents, Stephen and Joanne, his wife, Natalie, his sister and a close friend.
"It's gonna be pretty cool to have them here, pretty special," Cannone said. "They're looking forward to it. It's been a long journey."
Wild coach Bruce Boudreau, who spent much of his playing career in the minor leagues, is more than happy to give Cannone a shot.
"It's a great thing for guys to get their first game up, especially after they've played a few years in the minor leagues," Boudreau said. "He's earned it. He's played very well down in Iowa, so here's his chance."

With Cannone filling the fourth-line center slot, Tyler Graovac will move up to occupy the space between Nino Niederreiter and Charlie Coyle on the third line. Graovac played a career-high 18 minutes and 45 seconds in Saturday's contest against Arizona, scoring his third career goal in Minnesota's 4-1 win.
"I don't really want to settle in too much. I kind of want to keep pushing for more for myself," Graovac said. "That last game was such a blast for me and it was a great game, great to see [Boudreau] had the confidence in me to play me for 18 minutes. It's something I've been waiting for for a while."
