WHL Roundup: Lipon's natural hat trick lifts Blazers over Chiefs 5-1 @NHLdotcom

JC Lipon scored three times in the first period as the Kamloops Blazers downed the visiting Spokane Chiefs 5-1 on Friday in Western Hockey League action.

Lipon currently has a five-game point streak that includes seven goals and 14 points. He now has 18 points in eight games this season, which leads the WHL in scoring.

Cole Ully and Brendan Ranford also scored for the Blazers (7-0-1), while Ranford picked up two assists for a three-point outing.

Liam Stewart replied for the Chiefs (5-2-0).

Cole Cheveldave turned aside 36 shots for the win as Eric Williams stopped 18 shots in a losing effort.

Kamloops went 2-for-6 on the power play while Spokane failed to score on four chances with the man advantage.

Elsewhere in the WHL, it was: Everett 3, Brandon 2 (OT); Kootenay 4, Saskatoon 3; Lethbridge 3, Prince George 2; Portland 5, Prince Albert 2; Swift Current 3, Regina 2 (OT); Calgary 5, Edmonton 4 (SO); Red Deer 2, Medicine Hat 1; Kelowna 4, Victoria 1 and Seattle 6, Vancouver 4.

At Kamloops, B.C., the first period was all about Lipon as he scored a natural hat trick to give the Blazers a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

His first goal came 2:51 into the game and he scored again at 4:37. His third goal came by way of power play at 8:30.

Stewart scored the only goal of the second period and it brought Spokane to within two goals heading into the final period.

Ully responded for Kamloops at 5:29 of the third period and Ranford added a power-play goal at 7:58.


Silvertips 3 Wheat Kings 2 (OT)

At Brandon, Man., Landon Oslanski scored 1:17 into overtime as Everett (2-5-1) came back from two goals down to beat the Wheat Kings (5-2-1).


Ice 4 Blades 3

At Cranbrook, B.C., Brock Montgomery scored twice and set up one as Kootenay (2-5-0) handed Saskatoon (2-7-0) its fifth loss in a row.


Hurricanes 3 Cougars 2

At Lethbridge, Alta., Russell Maxwell scored twice on the power play and Ty Rimmer made 25 saves as the Hurricanes (3-5-0) downed Prince George (5-2-1).


Winterhawks 5 Raiders 2

At Prince Albert, Sask., Ty Rattie and Derrick Pouliot each had a goal and an assist as Portland (6-3-1) handed the Cougars (7-1-1) their first regulation-time loss of the season.


Broncos 3 Pats 2 (OT)

At Regina, Coda Gordon scored twice, including the overtime winner, and Eetu Laurikainen made 21 saves as Swift Current (4-1-4) edged the Pats (4-5-0).


Hitmen 5 Oil Kings 4 (SO)

At Edmonton, Greg Chase scored the shootout winner and Brooks Macek had a pair of goals in regulation time as Calgary (5-0-2) slipped past the Oil Kings (5-2-2).


Rebels 2 Tigers 1

At Red Deer, Alta., Bolton Pouliot stopped 32-of-33 shots and Turner Elson had a goal and an assist as the Rebels (5-5-1) beat Medicine Hat (3-5-1) for their third straight victory.


Rockets 4 Royals 1

At Victoria, Henrik Nyberg's second period goal stood up as the winner and Myles Bell chipped in with two assists as Kelowna (4-4-1) downed the Royals (6-4-0).


Thunderbirds 6 Giants 4

At Vancouver, Brendan Rouse scored three times and Brandon Glover made 28 saves as Seattle (4-3-0) defeated the Giants (2-6-0).
