WHL beats Russia 4-2 in finale of Super Series

Gregory Chase started and finished the Western Hockey League’s comeback from a two-goal deficit in a 4-2 victory against Russia in the sixth and final game of the Subway Super Series on Thursday night in Lethbridge, Ontario.

Russia, which beat the WHL 3-2 on Wednesday night in Red Deer, Alberta, grabbed a 1-0 lead when Kirill Voronin scored 1:19 after the opening faceoff and went up by two goals when Igor Rudenkov beat Tristan Jarry at 5:25.

The WHL outshot Russia 16-6 in the first period but couldn’t score until early in the second. Chase cut the deficit to one goal at 2:05, and Derrick Pouliot tied it with a power-play goal at 6:56.

Hunter Shinkaruk, a first-round selection (No. 24) by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2013 NHL Draft, put the WHL ahead to stay by beating Igor Shestyorkin 1:13 into the third period, and Chase, a seventh-round pick by the Edmonton Oilers in 2013, scored again at 6:08.

The WHL outshot Russia 42-17.

Russia won three of the six games in the series. The Russians lost twice to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, won once in regulation and once in a shootout against the Ontario Hockey League and split two games against the WHL.
