Whalers pound Greyhounds 8-1 to take 2-1 series lead

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. - Ryan Hayes had two goals and an assist, Phil McRae had a four-point night and the Plymouth Whalers pounded the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 8-1 in Ontario Hockey League playoff action Tuesday.

McRae had a goal and three assists, and Jay Gilbert, Leo Jenner, Tyler Seguin, Tyler Brown and Garrett Meurs also scored for Plymouth, which took a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven first round series. AJ Jenks added two assists.

Tomas Rachunek had the only goal for Sault Ste. Marie, which hosts Game 4 on Wednesday.

Matt Hackett made 27 saves to pick up the win, while Scott Wedgewood made four saves in mop-up duty late in the third for the Whalers.

Robin Lehner allowed five goals on 26 shots before being replaced to start the third. Bryce O'Hagan surrendered three goals on nine shots in relief.
