Beniers scores in OT for Kraken's 7th straight win

SEATTLE-- Matty Beniers scored on a breakaway seven seconds into overtime to give the Seattle Kraken their seventh win in a row, 3-2 against the Washington Capitals at Climate Pledge Arena on Thursday.

Beniers won the overtime face-off, got the puck back from Andre Burakovsky, and skated directly at the Capitals net to win it and extend the longest winning streak in Seattle's two seasons.
Seven seconds is the fastest a rookie has scored from the start of overtime in the regular season in NHL history.
"That's two guys making a play," Kraken coach Dave Hakstol said. "That's having a plan on the face-off again. I don't care what zone it's in, what time of the game, obviously, they had something in mind, and they went out and they executed. They went to battle and then finished it off."

Philipp Grubauer made 21 saves for the Kraken (15-5-3), who won their fourth straight overtime decision after coming back from down 2-0 after the first period.
"That was a hard-fought game, it's two good teams, right down to the wire," Hakstol said. "We did a lot of little things that guys in this room did during that hockey game in order to stay with it and not just find one point but get the extra point."
Alex Ovechkin had two assists for his 120th multiassist game, and Darcy Kuemper made 22 saves for the Capitals (10-11-4), who are 1-1-1 thus far on a six-game road swing.
"Not enough of the good stuff tonight, not enough of the right things," Washington coach Peter Laviolette said. "Everywhere, everywhere, the whole night, all three periods. There's nothing I'm happy about tonight."
Yanni Gourde tied it 2-2 at 17:33 of the third period when he backhanded in a rebound from a Daniel Sprong shot from the left side of the net.
"We've been doing a good job of finding ways to win and staying with it and a lot of momentum swings and games and we're doing a pretty good job of managing that," Kraken forward Jaden Schwartz said. "Whether it's special teams power play getting a big goal, or the penalty kill stepping up and it's a big save by [Grubauer]. Everyone's chipping in and playing together and we're getting results."

The Capitals went ahead 1-0 at 7:36 on a goal from Martin Fehervary, who one-timed a loose puck after Ovechkin's shot was blocked by Jared McCann.
Conor Sheary made it 2-0 at 14:04 with a power-play goal from the slot after tic-tac-toe passing from Ovechkin to Marcus Johansson
"Our game has definitely been trending upwards," Kuemper said. "Tonight we might not have had our best stuff or all our legs. We got off to a lead and unfortunately couldn't hang on to the two [points]. We got a point and we've just got to keep collecting as many as we can."
Seattle cut it to 2-1 at 13:28 of the second period with a power-play goal from Schwartz. Vince Dunn's shot hit the end boards and rebounded out in front, where Schwartz shot over Kuemper for his eighth of the season.
"We talked about just getting pucks to net, shooting a little bit more," Schwartz said. "[Dunn's] got a good release up top, so he did a good job. There's a few chances where we missed the net but pucks are bouncing off the boards and just got lucky with that one."
