Waddell to coach Team USA at Deutschland Cup; Chelios, Guerin to assist

USA Hockey announced Tuesday that former Atlanta Thrashers General Manager Don Waddell will coach Team USA at the four-team Deutschland Cup in Germany next month.

The tournament, which has been held every year since 1987, will take place Nov. 11-13 in Munich. In addition to the U.S., the Deutschland Cup will feature Germany, Slovakia and Switzerland.

Waddell, who also coached the Thrashers in an interim role in two different stints, will be assisted by former NHL All-Stars Chris Chelios and Bill Guerin. Chelios is currently an advisor to hockey operations with the Detroit Red Wings while Guerin is a player development coach with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Team USA has participated in the Deutschland Cup on six different occasions (2002-05, 2007, 2009) and has won the tourney in 2003 and '04. They took second in 2007 and '09 and finished third in '05.
