ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Carl Klingberg scored the winner early in the third period as the St.John's IceCaps beat the Portland Pirates 4-3 at home on Wednesday night.
Vinny Saponari, Kael Mouillierat and Jason Jaffray also scored for St.John's (30-34-6). Mark Dekanich made 28 saves for the win.
Darian Dziurzynski, David Rundblad and Jordan Martinook replied for the Pirates (38-27-5).
Klingberg added another goal for the IceCaps at the 1:57 mark of the third, rocketing a slap shot home from a rebound that found its way out to the right face-off dot.
With 2:38 left in the third, the Pirates moved within one of tying the game, when Rundblad hit a slap shot from the point.
In the first, the IceCaps jumped out to an early lead thanks to Mouillierat, who scored at the 14:14 mark of the first period on the power play, finishing off a give-and-go with Josh Lunden. Portland goalie Chad Johnson was unable to handle the awkward, bouncing puck.
Johnson made 23 stops for Portland.
Saponari doubled the IceCaps lead at the 2:01 mark of the second period, scoring a tap-in on the doorstep off a rebound, after Johnson had went cross-crease to stop a one-timer that left him out of place.
Dziurzynski tapped home a centring pass in the crease to put the Pirates back into the game at the 4:36 mark of the second.
Portland's Martinook caught Dekanich with an open five-hole on a quick wrister to tie the game 2-2 at the 8:35 mark of the second.
St.John's took back the lead at the 14:38 mark of the second, as Jaffray hammered home a slap shot past a sprawling Johnson.
The IceCaps went 2 for 4 on the power play and Portland was 1 for 5 on the night.
