VGK@WPG: Brossoit impresses with three straight saves

WINNIPEG -- Laurent Brossoit made 43 saves to win his seventh straight start, and the Winnipeg Jets defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 4-1 at Bell MTS Place on Sunday.

Brossoit, who is 10-1-1 in 12 games this season, made 26 saves in the second period, passing Ondrej Pavelec (25, Jan. 21, 2017) for the most in Jets history.
"You know what, I like periods like that," Brossoit said. "I like games like that where I'm tested early and often. The second period was definitely one of those and it got me into the game. There's not a lot of rest in between. I like that."

Kyle Connor had two goals and an assist, Mark Scheifele had a goal and an assist, and Blake Wheeler had two assists for Winnipeg (30-14-2), which has won three straight and five of its past six games.
Brandon Pirri scored, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 23 saves for Vegas (28-17-4), which had won eight of its past nine.
"I thought their goalie played really, really well," Golden Knights forward Max Pacioretty said. "And then they're able to capitalize on the mistakes that we did make, so we'd like to clean that up. Otherwise, a team effort for 60 minutes. We liked, for the most part, the way we played."

Connor gave the Jets a 1-0 lead at 5:45 of the second period, scoring shorthanded on a breakaway after Bryan Little chipped him a pass into the neutral zone.
"It's a role I've embraced," Connor said of playing on the penalty kill. "I like doing it and it kind of keeps you in the flow of the game a bit. I think I can use my speed to kind of create some havoc out there."
Mathieu Perreault extended the lead to 2-0 at 16:23, scoring on a backhand after knocking the puck past Golden Knights defenseman Deryk Engelland.
Pirri cut it to 2-1 at 1:03 of the third period on a redirection off Brayden McNabb's point shot. It was his eighth goal in 11 games this season.
"I thought we played good," Fleury said. "We had the puck a lot. We had some power plays, some chances, but just wish I could have made one of those breakaway saves to keep us in there."

Connor (18:47) and Scheifele (19:54) each scored into an empty net to push the Jets' lead to 4-1.
Vegas went 0-for-6 on the power play. Winnipeg went 0-for-2.
"A number of really good stands at the blue line," Jets coach Paul Maurice said. "We weren't easy to penetrate and then some good shot blocking. [Brossoit's] play was the difference between us winning and losing the game and giving up a power-play goal. He was outstanding."

They said it

"We had the chances, we just didn't put them in the back of the net. Like I said, I liked the power play tonight more than I liked it in a long time and just didn't put the puck in the back of the net. You've got to give their goalie some credit, he did a good job." -- Golden Knights coach Gerard Gallant
"[Brossoit has] been outstanding all year. We've probably said it a million times now. You can tell he came into camp with a chip on his shoulder, something to prove. Got an opportunity here and boy has he been a difference maker for our team. He's one of those guys that's a driver every day in practice, and in games. You can tell. His performance, when he's in the net, he's been great this year." -- Jets captain Blake Wheeler on goalie Laurent Brossoit
