Vannieuwenhuizen scores winner as the Giants downed the Cougars 5-1 @NHLdotcom

VANCOUVER - Wes Vannieuwenhuizen scored his first goal of the season and it stood up as the game winner as the Vancouver Giants defeated the Prince George Cougars 5-1 on Friday in Western Hockey League action.

Taylor Makin and Jordan Martinook had a goal and an assist each for the Giants (24-13-2) while Cain Franson and Brett Kulak added single goals.

Spencer Asuchak scored the lone goal for the Cougars (13-22-2).

Adam Morrison made 17 saves for the win while Devon Fordyce allowed four goals on 20 shots through 40 minutes of play. Drew Owsley came on in relief for the third and stopped 12 of 13 shots faced.

Neither club could score on the power play as they both went 0-for-6.
