WPG@VAN: Brossoit robs Schmidt to keep it 1-0 in 2nd

VANCOUVER -- Laurent Brossoit made 29 saves for the Winnipeg Jets in a 2-0 win against the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena on Friday.

Mark Scheifele scored a goal for a fourth straight game and extended his point streak to nine for Winnipeg (10-6-1), which has alternated wins and losses for seven games (4-3-0).
The Jets are 5-0-1 following a regulation loss and have won 10 of 11 against the Canucks dating to Dec. 22, 2016, including six straight in Vancouver.
"It all started with [Brossoit]," Scheifele said. "He made big saves when we needed him to."

Thatcher Demko made 29 saves for Vancouver (8-12-1), which had its point streak end at three (2-0-1) and has lost seven of 10 (2-7-1).
"You knew right from the puck drop that it was the type of game where if there was going to be a mistake, it would have a big impact on the end result of the game," Demko said. "Kind of a playoff style game, but I thought our guys rose to the challenge and put a good effort in."
Scheifele gave Winnipeg a 1-0 lead on a breakaway at 7:25 of the first period after the puck bounced over defenseman Alexander Elder's stick at the Jets blue line.
"I obviously saw [Demko] was far out of the net, but he's a he's a pretty stellar goaltender, a big body, so just kind of made my move and he bit a little bit, so I was happy to put it in," Schiefele said.
Scheifele has six goals and seven assists during his point streak.
Mason Appleton scored into an empty net to make it 2-0 with 1:17 remaining.
It was Brossoit's second NHL shutout and first since Dec. 22, 2018, with the Edmonton Oilers, also in Vancouver. The British Columbia native is 3-0-0 against the Canucks with a .981 save percentage.
"If there's a city that I want to have those stats, it's probably this one," Brossoit said.

Brossoit made four saves, including one against Elias Pettersson in tight, during a flurry in the final seconds of the first period. In the second period against Pettersson, he gloved a wrist shot from the left hash marks at 3:37 and made the save on a backdoor chance on a power play at 5:38.
"I'm just getting tired of saying we played a good game but we didn't score," Pettersson said. "It was another one of those tonight. We have shot opportunities, especially me. I'm trying to make the perfect pass when maybe I can shoot the easy shot and create a scramble and maybe, hopefully, score a goal. Maybe now when the puck isn't going in, just got to simplify."
Brossoit made the save against defenseman Nate Schmidt on a breakaway with 2:46 left in the second, reaching back with his blocker after the shot trickled under his arm.
"I felt fast today, and on that breakaway, I moved a little too fast," Brossoit said. "I overreacted a bit with my blocker. It hit my armpit, and I felt it drop and just made sure I covered it up."
Jets coach Paul Maurice praised Brossoit, who had not played since Feb. 2, watching Connor Hellebuyck play the previous six games.
"He's underrated," Maurice said. "Connor Hellebuyck gets all the accolades, as he should, he's a Vezina winner, but our goaltending tandem is just exceptionally strong."
Canucks coach Travis Green said they didn't make Brossoit's job hard enough.
"It felt like we had the puck a lot but didn't put enough pressure to the net with shots and traffic," Green said. "We missed the net a few times from the point when we had traffic. But there's also another team that has a say in what's going on. And sometimes you miss the net because they're in the shot lane and they're willing to block a shot."
The Jets and Canucks are scheduled to play here again Sunday.
