VAN@BUF: Okposo scores 200th career NHL goal

BUFFALO -- The Buffalo Sabres won their third straight game to start the season, 5-2 against the Vancouver Canucks at KeyBank Center on Tuesday.

Kyle Okposo and Zemgus Girgensons each had a goal and an assist, and Jeff Skinner and Tage Thompson scored 23 seconds apart in the third period for the Sabres (3-0-0), who have won three in a row to start the season for the first time since their four-game run in 2008-09. Craig Anderson made 32 saves.
Buffalo finished last among 31 teams in the NHL standings last season (15-34-7).
"What I like about the buzz, it's not about winning," Sabres coach Don Granato said. "We want to win, we play to win, obviously. … They play hard for each other and they want to come to the rink and see their buddies. They go hard in practice, they're building that. It's not something we're doing as coaches, obviously. They enjoy being around each other and you can feel and see that. For them to get rewarded by winning is even better.
" … You stand here happy to be 3-0, but you're in the NHL; you just take the points and move on. You take the points where you can get them, when you can get them and you know that you've got to work the next day. I think our guys have that perspective. They enjoy being around each other."

VAN@BUF: Skinner scores go-ahead goal on backhand

Bo Horvat and Justin Dowling scored, and Thatcher Demko made 38 saves for the Canucks (1-2-1), who played without defenseman Quinn Hughes because of an undisclosed injury. Vancouver coach Travis Green said Hughes was close to playing and doesn't expect him to be out long.
"We didn't play good enough to win, that's how I'd diagnose it," Green said. "That's a fast team over there. I thought that we struggled with their speed a little bit at times. And usually when you struggle with a team's speed, it's because you are not very good with the puck. I just don't think we were good enough to win tonight."
The Canucks outshot the Sabres 5-0 in the first six minutes, and Horvat gave them a 1-0 lead at 5:57 of the first period. Tanner Pearson won a battle behind the net before passing to Horvat in the slot.
Okposo scored his 200th NHL goal at 8:22 with a shot from the right circle to tie it 1-1.
Dowling put the Canucks back in front at 16:01 when he redirected Luke Schenn's point shot to make it 2-1.
Girgensons tipped in a shot from Okposo at 17:37 of the second period to tie it 2-2.
"It's just another brick in the foundation of the way we want to play," Okposo said. "That's something that you have to learn how to do as a team. You're not going to have it every night; we play 82 games. But to find a way to stay in it and slog through a bit of your 'B game' until you can find the legs, find your 'A game,' I think we did a really good job of that. So, that's something that is a good lesson for us to learn."
Skinner gave the Sabres a 3-2 lead at 3:33 of the third period, lifting a backhander from his knees.
Thompson scored 23 seconds later at 3:56 to make it 4-2, sweeping in a loose puck after Demko couldn't control a rebound.
"I think essentially what led to the goals, us not executing, us not moving our feet," Dowling said. "That's not our game. Our game is what was going on in the first 10 minutes of the first period. Just a mentality, it's a mindset. We've got to learn how to keep that going for 60 minutes."

VAN@BUF: Girgensons tips Okposo shot home in close

Rasmus Asplund scored an empty-net goal at 17:05 for the 5-2 final.
Sabres fans chanted "3-and-0" in the closing minutes.
"We just know how we want to play, and we believe in it," Okposo said. "You go through ups and downs and you've got to keep this momentum when you have it. We're just hoping to continue to keep that confidence for the season.
"We know it's going to dip at some points, we have a young group. But if we can continue to practice well and have games like that, it's going to be fun."
NOTES:Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin played his 200th NHL game. … Canucks forward Brock Boeser played 19:09 and had three shots on goal in his season debut. … Schenn and Vancouver defenseman Brad Hunt each made his season debut. Schenn had an assist and two shots on goal in 14:37 of ice time; Hunt was minus-3 in 15:51 and had five shots on goal.
