TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Scottie Upshall's third-period, power-play goal snapped a tie and lifted the Philadelphia Flyers to a preseason 3-2 victory over the Devils on Monday night, spoiling the coaching debut of New Jersey's Brent Sutter.
Upshall took a pass from Simon Gagne and scored the winning goal from the right circle at 8:42 of the period in the exhibition opener for both teams.
The Flyers took a 2-0 lead in the first period, a frame that featured five fights. Philadelphia's Jesse Boulerice and New Jersey's Mark Janssen dropped the gloves twice.
Lasse Kukkonen scored the first goal at 5:27 when his long shot eluded starting goalie Kevin Weekes. Mike Richards scored at 19:28 off a feed from R.J. Umberger.
New Jersey rallied in the third period with help from Philadelphia penalties. The Devils scored at 1:12 during a 5-on-3 power play when Zach Parise connected from short range. With the Devils on another two-man advantage, Andy Greene scored from the blue line to tie it 2-2 at 6:10.
Martin Biron played the first two periods in goal for the Flyers, and Antero Niittymaki took over in the third. Jordan Parise took over for Weekes in the Devils net midway through the game.
The Flyers brought a full roster of players to the game at Sovereign Bank Arena. Veteran defenseman Denis Gauthier and second-year forward Stefan Ruzicka were the only notable absentees.
New Jersey held a 29-23 shots advantage in front of an announced crowd of 4,615.
