OTTAWA - Joe Underwood scored 55 seconds into overtime Friday night as the Saginaw Spirit fought back from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Ottawa 67's 3-2 in Ontario Hockey League action.
Underwood beat Adam Courchaine with a high shot just 20 seconds after 67's forward Corey Cowick took a penalty for goaltender interference and then a misconduct on his way to the penalty box.
"I thought the defenceman pushed him in," Ottawa coach and general manager Brian Kilrea said of the penalty call. "But if you make contact with the goaltender you have to be prepared to take a penalty. The refs are told to look for that."
Cowick and Logan Couture had given the 67's (24-15-2-2) a 2-0 lead with goals less than three minutes apart midway through the second period. Courchaine made 37 saves in the loss.
Just 41 seconds after Couture's goal, Jordan Skellett scored to get the Spirit (25-15-0-3) on the board.
Edward Pasquale stopped 33 shots in the Spirit goal and was named the game's first star.
