Defenseman was No. 17 pick in 2018 NHL Draft

Ty Smith signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the New Jersey Devils on Monday.

Smith, a defenseman who was the No. 17 pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, had 73 points (14 goals, 59 assists) and a plus-44 rating in 69 games with Spokane of the Western Hockey League last season, when he was an alternate captain. The 18-year-old was named to the WHL First All-Star Team and finished second in assists and points among WHL defensemen.

Smith had three assists in five games to help Canada win the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.
