Three players selected at the 2010 Entry Draft will headline the 22-player roster for Canada West at the 2010 World Junior 'A' Challenge in Penticton, B.C., next month.
Canada West, one of two Canadian teams competing in the six-team tournament slated for Nov. 8-14 at the South Okanagan Events Centre, has appeared in the gold-medal game at all four previous World Junior 'A' Challenges. The club has settled for silver medals the last two years after winning gold in the first two events.
The Canada West roster includes 2010 draftees defenseman Benjamin Gallacher
(Panthers, fourth round), right wing Mark MacMillan
(Canadiens, fourth round) and center Brendan O'Donnell
(Lightning, sixth round). Gallacher and O'Donnell are also two of seven returnees from last year's tournament, along with Clarke Breitkreuz
, Madison Dias
, Grayson Downing
, Joey Laleggia
and Ryan Marshall.
The roster is comprised of players from the British Columbia Hockey League, Alberta Junior Hockey League, Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, Manitoba Junior Hockey League and Superior International Junior Hockey League.
"Our staff has worked tirelessly to watch players from the five western leagues over the first few months of the season and we are confident we have a good mix of players to help us regain the gold medal," said Canada West coach Larry Wintoneak. "We're looking forward to getting on the ice in Penticton next week as we prepare as a team to get back to the gold medal game."
Canada West will play in Group B at the tournament, along with Russia and Switzerland. Canada East competes in Group A with Sweden and the United States. Round-robin play will run through Nov. 10 and both semifinals will take place Nov. 13. The gold-medal game, shown nationally on TSN and RDS, is scheduled for Nov. 14.
