Trending: Wings drop first shootout of the season to Ducks

ANAHEIM -- The Red Wings gave the Anaheim Ducks a nice 25th anniversary present -- a shootout victory.
Troy Terry scored the only goal of the shootout to lift the Ducks to the 3-2 win.

Thomas Vanek, Frans Nielsen and Gustav Nyquist did not score in their shootout attempts.
Tyler Bertuzzi and Darren Helm scored in regulation for Detroit while Hampus Lindholm and Jakob Silfverberg tallied for Anaheim.
Jimmy Howard had 25 saves for the Wings while John Gibson made 19 saves for the Ducks.
The Red Wings fell to 0-1-2 while the Ducks are undefeated at 3-0-0.
The Wings return home to host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday at Little Caesars Arena while the Ducks host the Arizona Coyotes Wednesday night.
1. Tyler Bertuzzi: Bertuzzi finished last season on a goal-scoring tear, potting five goals in his last eight games of the season. Over the summer, he focused on getting stronger and a little faster, and that appears to have paid off. Bertuzzi scored a typical Bertuzzi goal in the first game this season against Columbus, going to the net and jamming home a loose puck. On Monday in Anaheim, it was a far prettier play, started by Frans Nielsen with a between-the-legs pass to Michael Rasmussen, who backhanded it to Bertuzzi. Bertuzzi then dazzled with a spinning goal past Gibson.

2. Jimmy Howard: Howard was not facing as many shots as Gibson in the early going, but there were several shots that required his full measure of skill. At 10:53 of the first, Troy Terry drove to the net and tipped the puck but Howard was there for the quick stop. At 14:15 of the second, Terry found Adam Henrique heading toward the net but again, Howard foiled the attempt. Then at 14:56 of the second, Howard got the second assist on Darren Helm's goal. It was the ninth assist of Howard's career. At 14:16 of the third, Howard robbed Terry again, preserving the 2-2 tie. But Terry got the last laugh in the shootout, scoring the lone goal for either team.

We gotta find a way to flip the switch from being on the wrong end of these games. We can't get down on ourselves right now, because we have played good hockey for pretty much two out of the first three games. 3. Darren Helm: With a goaltender like Gibson, who came into the game with a 1.00 goals-against average and .973 save percentage in two games, it's most likely that he will stop the first shot. At 14:56 of the second period, Helm shot from the slot, Gibson made the save but the puck popped back out to Helm, who turned and backhanded the rebound into the net for his first goal of the season. Danny DeKeyser and Howard assisted.

Their goalie was good yesterday, but today we were a little careless with the puck. I thought it was too many turnovers, especially on their blue line.
