USA Hockey filled out the rest of its coaching and support staff for the U.S. men's hockey team that will look for gold in Vancouver in February.
New York Rangers
coach John Tortorella and New York Islanders
coach Scott Gordon
were named as assistants to Olympic head coach Ron Wilson.
"I was excited just because I didn't know what my standing was as far as if the opportunity was going to be there," Gordon told NHL.com. "I was hopeful but thrilled it came about and I'm really looking forward to it."
Tortorella and Gordon have a wealth of international experience. Gordon was an assistant to Wilson on the U.S. squad at the 2009 IIHF World Championships that finished fourth in Switzerland, and also played on the 1992 U.S. Olympic team.
"My experience when I was a player, one of my best memories is when we walked into the arena for the first game, the amount of fan support we had in France was unexpected," said Gordon. "When you go out into the arena and see flags waving and people with their face painted red, white and blue, you never know if you'll ever experience it again. That I've been given this opportunity is something I'll treasure as much as when I was a player."
Gordon said he coached the defenseman under Wilson at the World Championships, but that it was too soon for him to know what his role would be in Vancouver.
Tortorella coached the U.S. team to a sixth-place finish at the 2008 World Championships in Quebec. He also was an assistant to Peter Laviolette
on the 2005 World Championships team that finished sixth in Austria.
"Anytime you have a chance to represent your country, it's an honor," Tortorella told reporters at Rangers prospect camp. "It's very exciting because we’re going to Vancouver, not across the pond -- we're playing right in a Canadian city."
