Toronto Marlies, Hamilton Bulldogs to play in exhibition event in Scotland @NHLdotcom

TORONTO - A pair of Canadian-based American Hockey League teams are headed overseas.

The Toronto Marlies and the Hamilton Bulldogs were selected as the AHL's entries in the Gardiner Cup exhibition tournament taking place in Edinburgh, Scotland in late September. The Marlies and Bulldogs will be joined by the Belfast Giants and the Edinburgh Capitals.

"This will be a terrific hockey and life experience for our players and we're honoured to be a part of this unique event," Marlies general manager Jeff Jackson said Thursday in a statement. "We are looking forward to a competitive tournament and showcasing a number of our NHL prospects to the hockey fans in Scotland."

After Toronto and Hamilton square off in an exhibition game Sept. 24, the Marlies will face the Capitals in one of two semifinal games Sept. 26. The Bulldogs meet the Giants in the other semifinal, with the winning teams facing off for the Gardiner Cup the following day.

"Both organizations saw this as a wonderful opportunity for their players and staff to see a part of the world that might be new to them, while at the same time, prepare for the upcoming AHL season," Bulldogs president Glenn Stanford said in a statement.
