TOR@PIT: Crosby taps in Hornqvist's dish for PPG

PITTSBURGH-- Sidney Crosby had one goal and three assists, and the Pittsburgh Penguins took over first place in the Metropolitan Division with a 5-2 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs at PPG Paints Arena on Tuesday.

Anthony Angello, a late addition to the lineup, scored his first NHL goal, and Tristan Jarry made 34 saves for the Penguins (37-15-6), who moved one point ahead of the Washington Capitals in the division with their third straight win. Angello took the place of center Evgeni Malkin, who was scratched after warmups with an illness.
"I think just everyone's contributing, and our work ethic, and urgency, has been there every night," Crosby said. "We give ourselves a chance when we have that. So I feel like there's still areas we can improve on, but I think the way everyone's getting involved, I think the work ethic always sets the tone for everything else."

Frederik Andersen made 19 saves for the Maple Leafs (31-22-8), who are 3-5-1 in their past nine games. Toronto is third in the Atlantic Division, two points ahead of the Florida Panthers having played two more games.
"It looks like the process that we want to go through is to just get embarrassed enough to the point where we really look in the mirror and recognize what's required for us to be able to compete at a high level," Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe said.
The Penguins have outscored the Maple Leafs 11-3 in two games this season. They complete a home-and-home at Toronto on Thursday.

TOR@PIT: Crosby, Zucker team up for power-play goal

Bryan Rust gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead on a power play at 11:41 of the first period. He took a cross-ice pass from Crosby and scored on a wrist shot from the right circle.
Angello made it 2-0 at 17:03 by deflecting a shot from Sam Lafferty.
"It was awesome," said Angello, a 23-year-old who played his fifth NHL game. "It's a dream come true to play in the NHL. It's another, obviously, to score."

The Penguins were outshot 14-4 in the second period, when they scored three goals.
Jason Zucker scored on the power play, extending the lead to 3-0 at 2:52.
Crosby made it 4-0 with a power-play goal on a backhand at 7:11. The center has 23 points (seven goals, 16 assists) in 13 games since returning from core muscle surgery.
The Maple Leafs failed to score on a 5-on-3 that lasted 1:19, and Teddy Blueger pushed the lead to 5-0 on a wrist shot from the slot at 12:35, 11 seconds after it went back to even strength.
Auston Matthews made it 5-1 on a one-timer with 3:25 remaining in the second, and Kyle Clifford made it 5-2 when a shot from Jason Spezza went off him in the crease with 1:59 left in the period. Matthews leads the NHL with 43 goals.
"It's frustrating," Matthews said. "It's obviously frustrating. We've got 20-plus games left, obviously. We need to have more urgency in our game. Come in on time. Have to start playing some good hockey here and really figure it out in this locker room going forward."

They said it

"Everyone's got to take a look in the mirror and we have to be better. That's unacceptable. We've got to find the urgency, the passion, the love of the game, the love to compete for each other. All that needs to come. I don't know why it's not there. I think sometimes, like I've touched on earlier, when we struggle, we want the easy game. When you play good teams, it's not going to be easy." -- Maple Leafs defenseman Jake Muzzin
"I think [Crosby] is getting better with every game that he's playing here. I think this is his favorite time of year also. He tends to play his best when the stakes get high. … I just think he's the most complete player in the game. He's so explosive offensively, but he's so conscientious defensively too. It doesn't surprise me that he elevates his game the way he does at this time of year." -- Penguins coach Mike Sullivan
