Matthews, Tavares score in Maple Leafs' 6-2 victory

PHILADELPHIA-- Calle Jarnkrok and John Tavares each had a goal and two assists for the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 6-2 win against the Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center on Sunday.

Conor Timmins had a goal and an assist, and Mitchell Marner had three assists for Toronto (25-9-7), which was coming off a 4-1 win against the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday. Matt Murray made 34 saves.
"I thought our start was really good," Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said. "We made good on a lot of our chances and obviously scored a bunch of goals, and that put us in a good spot in the game. I didn't think we had our best game by any means, relied on our goaltender probably too much, but he was terrific."
Travis Konecny and Nicolas Deslauriers scored for Philadelphia (15-18-7), which had its four-game winning streak end. Carter Hart made 29 saves.
"We self-destructed," Flyers coach John Tortorella said. "We just can't overcome some of the things we give them for free. ... We weren't sharp. We haven't got spanked like that in a while, and we deserved it. Not only through self-destruction, but our positioning, just everything about our game defensively, we just weren't on."
Jarnkrok put the Maple Leafs ahead 1-0 at 9:51 of the first period when Marner found him open on the left post. Jarnkrok has 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in nine games since returning from a groin injury that caused him to miss seven games.

TOR@PHI: Jarnkrok puts the Maple Leafs on the board

"I'm just trying to play my game," Jarnkrok said. "Try to work as hard as I can then create some space for those two (Marner and Tavares)."
Keefe said the injury could have been a blessing in disguise as it allowed Jarnkrok a less stressful way to adjust to his first season with the Maple Leafs.
"I think the time with the injury really helped him get really comfortable here," Keefe said. "He comes into a new team, he arrived shortly before training camp, and then things are moving real fast and you've got a young family, a new team, new organization, new teammates, all that. It takes some time. I think the injury actually really helped sort of settle things down, allowed him some time to get comfortable. ... And since he's come back, he's been terrific and he complements those guys well."
Zach Aston-Reese made it 2-0 at 17:44. After Flyers defenseman Tony DeAngelo fanned on a clearing attempt, Pontus Holmberg poked the puck on net, and Aston-Reese scored on the rebound.
Konecny cut it to 2-1 at 18:00 when he gloved down a clearing attempt from Marner and beat Murray from the right face-off dot. It extended his goal streak to six games and his point streak to eight (nine goals, six assists), each of which are NHL career highs.
"I felt like there were times we were in the game, but when we got momentum they grabbed it right back," Konecny said.
Timmins, who was playing in his 14th game this season and 53rd in the NHL, scored his first career goal to make it 3-1 at 7:01 of the second period.
"I think I was squeezing my stick a little on some opportunities in these first 30 games," Timmins said. "I just had to shoot more pucks, and luckily that went in. It was a nice feeling."

TOR@PHI: Matthews buries the puck to score PPG

Deslauriers cut it to 3-2 at 8:50 after a strong Flyers forecheck led to a Maple Leafs turnover.
Timothy Liljegren scored short-handed to make it 4-2 at 10:07. Jarnkrok beat Scott Laughton on a face-off in Philadelphia's zone, and Liljegren's one-timer squeezed between Hart's pads.
Jarnkrok then tipped a clearing attempt from Morgan Frost to Tavares, who scored from the slot to make it 5-2 at 12:22.
Auston Matthews scored a power-play goal at 13:13 of the third period for the 6-2 final.
NOTES:Maple Leafs defenseman TJ Brodie missed the game and is day to day because of an undisclosed injury. Keefe said it's something Brodie has been playing through. With the Maple Leafs not playing again until Wednesday, he saw it as an opportunity give Brodie an extra day of rest. ... Marner has eight points (two goals, six assists) during a five-game point streak. His second assist was his 350th, moving him past Tim Horton for seventh in Toronto history. ... Matthews became the third United States-born player to begin his NHL career with seven straight 20-goal seasons, joining Patrick Kane (13) and Jimmy Carson (seven). ... Konecny is the third Flyers player in the past 20 years with a goal streak of six games, joining Scott Hartnell (2011-12) and Jeff Carter (2009-10).
