SUNRISE, Fla. -- Frederik Andersen made 45 saves, and Mitchell Marner scored the only goal in the shootout to lift the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 3-2 win against the Florida Panthers at BB&T Center on Wednesday.
Marner, who had a game-high nine shots on goal, beat goalie Roberto Luongo in the bottom half of the third round of the shootout to win it.
"Obviously, it feels nice to get one out there," Marner said. "I was just trying to get it over that stick of his. He got a piece of it, and luckily it had enough juice to get through. I wanted that move from the start, and luckily it went in."

Rookie Auston Matthews had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs. He has 11 goals in his past 15 games and has scored the first goal of the game seven times in those 15 games.
William Nylander also scored for Toronto (15-12-7), which has won four in a row on the road.
"We're getting a bit more comfortable on the road," Matthews said. "It's all part of maturing, but the big thing is we have to keep doing it. We can't be too satisfied. We've got to go into Tampa tomorrow night and win and keep rolling."

Jonathan Marchessault had a goal and an assist, and Vincent Trocheck scored for the Panthers (15-14-7), who have lost 10 of 14 games (4-4-6) since Tom Rowe replaced Gerard Gallant as coach Nov. 28.
Luongo made 38 saves but failed for the second time to pass Terry Sawchuk for fifth place on the NHL all-time wins list. Luongo and Sawchuk each has 447 career victories.
Florida center Aleksander Barkov left the game in the second period with an undisclosed injury. Barkov, who came in with a five-game point streak, leads the Panthers with 27 points. Rowe had no update on Barkov's injury after the game.
Toronto led 2-0 entering the third period, but Marchessault scored 29 seconds in, and Trocheck tied it 2-2 at 2:43. The Panthers outshot the Maple Leafs 17-7 in the third.
"Great comeback, proud as heck of the guys," Rowe said. "They never gave up. I thought we battled real hard in the second, and then what we did in the third was unbelievable, putting up the shots that we put up. I know it's disappointing for the locker room, but to get a point out of that, the way the game was going, I thought was unbelievable."
Matthews put the Maple Leafs up 1-0 when he scored at 10:38 of the first period, and Nylander made it 2-0 with a power-play goal with 2:06 left in the second.

Goal of the game

Nylander scored on a 4-on-3 power play off a pretty tic-tac-toe passing play that began with defenseman Jake Gardiner in the high slot. Gardiner passed to Matthews in the right circle, and Matthews slid the puck over to Nylander at the left faceoff circle. Nylander then beat Luongo with a high wrist shot to the blocker side.

Save of the game

Luongo stopped Nikita Zaitsev's shot through traffic from the point with 5:17 left in the first period but fell on his stomach in the process. When Connor Brown tried to put in the rebound from the left side of the net, Luongo managed to kick out his right leg to make the save.

Highlight of the game

Panthers rookie Denis Malgin had a penalty shot with 6:54 left in the third period after he was slashed from behind by Gardiner. He tried to slowly deke to his backhand, but Andersen made a stick save.

Unsung performance of the game

Florida appeared to have a great scoring opportunity in the first period when defenseman Keith Yandle took a pass in the slot after trailing the play and was alone on Andersen. But van Riemsdyk caught up to Yandle from behind and got his stick in the way to neutralize his shot.

They said it

"The young guys are getting better and becoming dominant players." -- Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock
"I was definitely motivated for this one. These were big points for us." -- Maple Leafs goalie Frederik Andersen
"If [Aleksander Barkov] was anywhere else, if he was in Toronto or any big city where hockey was kind of the focal point, you'd be seeing a lot of him. He is the glue to this team, and when he's out of the lineup, it's an enormous chunk. He's one of the best two-way centers in the League, in my opinion, and I think in everybody's opinion. Losing him is like losing [Sidney] Crosby in Pittsburgh, or someone like that." -- Panthers forward Vincent Trocheck on losing Barkov to injury
