CALGARY --Calle Jarnkrok broke a tie early in the third period for the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 2-1 win against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome on Thursday.

Jarnkrok tucked in a rebound at the right post at 2:20 after Morgan Rielly was stopped on a breakaway.
"We stayed with it, stayed patient," Toronto forward Mitchell Marner said. "Just stayed to our game plan and got rewarded for it."
Marner scored, and Auston Matthews had an assist for the Maple Leafs (38-16-8), who have won four of their past five. Joseph Woll made 25 saves.
"It was awesome, especially seeing how tight we were defensively in the third period," Woll said. "I think that's pretty special to see the guys play like that, especially with all so many new guys in the lineup. To be that consistent, really shut it down like that was pretty sweet."

Defensemen Erik Gustafsson and Luke Schenn each made their debuts for Toronto.
Gustafsson had one blocked shot in 9:52 of ice time after being acquired with a first-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft from the Washington Capitals on Tuesday for Rasmus Sandin. Schenn had four hits and two blocked shots in 10:42 after being acquired from the Vancouver Canucks for a third-round pick in the 2023 draft on Tuesday.
"When you hear that Toronto's in the mix, obviously, you're kind of excited," said Schenn, who played four seasons with the Maple Leafs from 2008-12. "Following from a distance, the season they've had and the talent they've got around here and how they're gearing up and building for hopefully a good postseason here, you want to be a part of that. This is the best time of the year, being in the stretch run like this."
Blake Coleman scored, and Jacob Markstrom made 32 saves for the Flames (27-22-13), who have lost four in a row (0-2-2) and lead the NHL in one-goal games and losses (13-11-13).
"We all hate losing," Coleman said. "It's honestly pretty incredible how many one-goal games we've lost this year. The best way to sum it up and the only thing I can think of right now is we're a great team that just doesn't know how to win right now.
"We all feel like we could be a team in a much better position right now, but at the end of the day, it's points and structured the way it is for a reason. You've got to win hockey games, and we've just found way too many ways to lose."

TOR@CGY: Coleman gives Flames lead with SHG in 1st

Coleman gave Calgary a 1-0 lead at 3:32 of the first period with a short-handed goal, scoring high blocker on a breakaway.
Marner tied it 1-1 at 7:36 of the second period when he scored five-hole after stick-handling around Milan Lucic and Rasmus Andersson through the slot.
"Just kind of got it up there with space and kind of tried to get going downhill with speed, make a move, make another move, and get it on net and it went in," Marner said.

Nazem Kadri thought he restored the Flames' lead with a wrist shot from the left face-off circle on a power play at 8:45, but video review determined he preceded the puck into the offensive zone.
Markstrom then kept it tied by making a right pad save on a wraparound attempt by Matthews at 16:12, and a left pad save on William Nylander's wrist shot on a breakaway with 37 seconds left in the period.
"Tough loss," Markstrom said. "Close again, but it's been like this way too many times. It's frustrating not to get away with any points. We've just got to bear down and get going and find some light here in the tunnel."
