Bruins score five in Game 1 win against Maple Leafs

BOSTON -- David Pastrnak had a goal and two assists for the Boston Bruins in a 5-1 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference First Round at TD Garden on Thursday.
Brad Marchand and David Krejci each had a goal and an assist, and Tuukka Rask made 26 saves for the Bruins, who went 1-3-1 to end the regular season.

Boston went 3-for-6 on the power play and outshot Toronto 40-27.
"We kind of knew that we needed a little reset, we needed a couple days of rest and we had to bring it for the playoffs," Bruins forward David Backes said. "Now, it's throw it all into the game. ... And I think as a collective unit, we all just looked at each other and said, 'It's time to go out there and do our thing and not be distracted by anything.' It was a pretty solid effort."

Frederik Andersen made 35 saves for the Maple Leafs, who went 0-for-3 on the power play.
"We were outscored 3-0 on special teams, three on the [penalty kill]. That's most likely never going to get it done," Toronto defenseman Ron Hainsey said. "Not nearly enough offensive-zone time for us. It felt like we spent the vast majority of the game on our half of the ice. We weren't able to get any long, sustained pushes in their end."

Marchand gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead at 5:28 of the first period with a power-play goal. Torey Krug skated into the zone and passed to Marchand in the left circle, and he cut to the net and scoring with a backhand.
Zach Hyman tied it 1-1 at 16:52 on a partial breakaway, skating by Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy before scoring with a backhand.
Backes scored a power-play goal to make it 2-1 at 15:43 of the second period, kicking the puck to his stick and scoring top shelf off a cross-crease pass from Krejci.
Pastrnak scored from the high slot to make it 3-1 with 38 seconds left in the period. Andersen stopped Pastrnak's one-timer from the high slot, but Marchand gathered the rebound and passed back to Pastrnak, who scored blocker side with a snap shot.

"Obviously, I tried a one-timer on the short side, but as soon as I had to stop the puck I didn't see anything on the short side and the [defenseman] kind of stepped up on me. So I just tried to shoot far side and it ended up being in the net," Pastrnak said.
The Bruins went ahead 4-1 when Pastrnak hit the crossbar and Sean Kuraly batted the rebound out of the air past Andersen at 7:41 of the third period.
Krejci scored to make it 5-1 at 11:29 with a power-play goal. After Nazem Kadri was given a five-minute charging major and game misconduct for his hit on Tommy Wingels at 8:18, Krejci took a pass from Jake DeBrusk and shot off Andersen's pads into the net from a sharp angle.
"We talked about the special teams being key in this series, we know they have a good power play," Bruins center Patrice Bergeron said. "Sure, so do we. But at the same time, we need to make sure that we do the job and I'm sure they're going to make some adjustments. We need to make sure that we keep things simple like we did tonight."

Need to know

Wingels did not return after the hit by Kadri, and Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said he was being evaluated after the game. ... Krejci is the 10th player in Bruins history to score 30 playoff goals and is one from tying Wayne Cashman (31) for ninth.
