Top prospects highlight USA junior camp roster @NHLdotcom

Boston University center Jack Eichel, who is expected to be a top-two pick at the 2015 NHL Draft, highlights the list of 39 invites to the United States National Junior Evaluation Camp to be held Aug. 1-8 in Lake Placid, N.Y.

USA Hockey made the announcement Thursday.

The camp will help determine parts of the final U.S. roster for the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship, which will be played in Helsinki, Finland, from Dec. 26-Jan. 5.

Eichel, who served as captain for the 2015 U.S. National Junior Team, is one of 18 invited players eligible for the 2015 draft at BB&T Center in Sunrise, Fla., on June 26-27.

Winner of the 2015 Hobey Baker Award as college hockey's best player, Eichel is No. 2 on NHL Central Scouting's final ranking of North American skaters eligible for the 2015 draft. He is one of eight invited players ranked among the top 30 on Central Scouting's final list of North American skaters. Defenseman Noah Hanifin is No. 3, followed by Zachary Werenski (No. 9) and Brandon Carlo (No. 25). Among the forwards are Kyle Connor (No. 13), Paul Bittner (No. 26), Brock Boeser (No. 27) and Colin White (No. 29).

Center Auston Matthews is one of five invites eligible for the 2016 NHL Draft. He currently is the top prospect in his draft class.

There are 11 players invited to camp who played for the United States at the 2015 WJC in Montreal and Toronto: goaltender Brandon Halverson (Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, OHL); defensemen Carlo (Tri-City Americans, WHL), Ryan Collins (University of Minnesota, Big10), Hanifin (Boston College, HEA), Werenski (University of Michigan, Big10); forwards Eichel (Boston University, HEA), Dylan Larkin (Grand Rapids Griffins, AHL), Matthews (U.S. under-18 NTDP, USHL), Sonny Milano (Plymouth Whalers, OHL), Nick Schmaltz (University of North Dakota, NCHC), Alex Tuch (Boston College, HEA).

The United States has medaled in three of the past six World Junior Championship tournaments (gold in 2010 and 2013, and bronze in 2011). The U.S. finished fifth in 2015.

The camp will be held at the Lake Placid Olympic Training Center, and games and practices will be at Lake Placid Olympic Center's 1980 Herb Brooks Arena. United States coach Ron Wilson and assistant coaches Chris Chelios, Danton Cole and Kevin Reiter will have their team practice and scrimmage against Finland and Sweden.
