were forced to play without two of their top defensemen Sunday night.
Just prior to warmups before Philadelphia's match against the Washington Capitals
at the Verizon Center, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren
announced that Kimmo Timonen
and Andrej Meszaros
will be out indefinitely with lower-body injuries.
Timonen, who had appeared in a team-high 248 consecutive games, was one of five players to have appeared in all 63 games for Philadelphia this season. He has 2 goals, 34 assists and a plus-8 rating. His 34 assists rank third among all NHL defensemen.
Entering Sunday's action, Meszaros had appeared in all but one game this season for the Flyers. He has 7 goals, 18 assists and a plus-6 rating in 62 contests.
, who was recalled from the American Hockey League earlier Sunday, was in the lineup against the Caps. The 23-year-old has appeared in 18 regular-season games for Philadelphia, tallying a goal and 2 assists with a plus-8 rating.
