Fandom-250

The Penguins ranked No. 1 in the NHL and No. 18 among professional sports franchises worldwide in Time's inaugural "Fandom" 250 list.
The list, which was compiled by Time Inc's Fansided, ranks fandoms based on the following criteria: longevity, size, worth, and the quality of the fandom, which they call the passion barometer. The list features a variety of fandoms, including professional sports franchises, celebrities, companies, television shows, and fictional characters. Because this is a yearly endeavor, more weight is given to fandoms that were considered "hot" in 2016.

The Penguins ranked 70th overall in the world fandom rankings, outscoring notable figures such as, Snapchat (75th), HBO (81st), Steph Curry (114th), Starbucks (151st), Jimmy Fallon (157th), and the Los Angeles Dodgers (182nd).
The top five of the Fandom 250 list include the Chicago Cubs (1st), Star Wars (2nd), Beyonce (3rd), Game of Thrones (4th), and the Dallas Cowboys (5th). President-elect Donald Trump was ranked 20th.
In addition to the Penguins, the NHL had five fandoms that placed within the top 250. Those fandoms included the Chicago Blackhawks (78th), Detroit Red Wings (113th), Montreal Canadiens (150th), Toronto Maple Leafs (184th), and Boston Bruins (207th).
Pittsburgh features two teams (Penguins and Steelers) that rank in the top-20 among professional sports franchises. Oakland, California (Raiders and Warriors) and Boston, Massachusetts (Celtics, Patriots, and Red Sox) are the only other cities in the world with two or more top-20 professional sports franchises on the list.
