This Week in Centennial History: Devils, Stars win first Cup titles

New Jersey, Dallas each celebrate initial championship @NHLdotcom

Center Nico Hischier made history by becoming the first player born in Switzerland to be taken No. 1 when he was selected by the New Jersey Devils with the first pick in the 2017 NHL Draft presented by adidas on June 23 at United Center. Hischier and the 216 players taken after him will try to become the next group of NHL stars.

As part of the League's Centennial Celebration, is taking a look back at memorable events each week.

Here are Centennial highlights for the week of June 18-24:


June 24, 1995: Forward John MacLean still relishes the memory of lifting the Stanley Cup after the New Jersey Devils defeat the Detroit Red Wings 5-2 to complete a four-game sweep in the Final and win their first championship.

June 24, 2013: The Chicago Blackhawks take home the Stanley Cup for the second time in four seasons after stunning the Boston Bruins with two late goals for a 3-2 victory in Game 6 of the Final at TD Garden.

June 23, 1999: The Hockey Hall of Fame waives its usual three-year waiting period and announces recently retired center Wayne Gretzky will be part of the Class of 1999.

June 22, 2013: Two goals by forward Patrick Kane give the Blackhawks a 3-1 win against the Bruins in Game 5 of the Final at United Center, moving Chicago within one victory of the championship.


June 21, 2013: Alain Vigneault is named the 35th coach in the history of the New York Rangers.


June 20, 1995: A spectacular goal by defenseman Scott Niedermayer and a more conventional one by forward Jim Dowd carry the Devils to a 4-2 win against the Red Wings in Game 2 of the Final at Joe Louis Arena. The win puts New Jersey ahead 2-0 in the best-of-7 series.

June 19, 1999: Forward Brett Hull's goal at 14:51 of the third overtime gives the visiting Dallas Stars a 3-2 victory against the Buffalo Sabres in Game 6 of the Final, bringing the Stanley Cup to Texas for the first time.

June 18, 1975: Bobby Orr of the Bruins wins the Norris Trophy as the top defenseman in the NHL for the eighth consecutive year.
