OSHAWA, Ont. - John Tavares had two goals and an assist, all in the third period, as Oshawa fought back for a 6-4 win over Niagara in the Generals' OHL home opener Friday.
Goals by Tavares and Robert Kousal brought the Generals back from a 4-2 deficit and Kory Nagy scored the winner short-handed with 8:44 remaining. Tavares added the clincher into an empty net, his fifth goal and ninth point in three games this season.
Rookies Nick Esposto and Andy Andreoff also scored for the Generals, who outshot the IceDogs 39-30.
Drew Schiestel led the IceDogs with a goal and two assists. Matt Piva, Michael MacIsaac and Andrew Merrett also scored for Niagara.
Daryl Borden made 26 saves for the win in his first game this season. Mark Visentin made 33 saves in defeat.
Both teams scored once on the power play, the Generals on eight chances and the IceDogs on seven.
